Penfield, NY (February 8, 2023) A juvenile was arrested for pointing a replica handgun at other students at Bay Trail Middle School this morning.

On February 8, 2023, at 9:03 in the morning, Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 1760 Scribner Road, in the Town of Penfield for a middle school student who brought what appeared to be a firearm to school. Investigation reveals at some point during the day the firearm was passed off to another student who pointed it down a crowded hallway. A brave student reported the incident to school administrators, who intervened and secured the student and firearm and called 911. Upon further inspection, the weapon was determined to be a realistic looking replica handgun and not capable of being fired.

The 13 year old juvenile who pointed the replica at other students is charged with:

  • Menacing in the Second Degree (Class A-Misdemeanor)

The student was issued a juvenile appearance ticket and released to parental custody.

The investigation involving the 14 year old student who brought the replica to school is ongoing.

We can only imagine the fear this instilled in students who were in that hallway. Incidents such as this are clearly concerning to all students, staff and parents. We take these matters seriously and investigate them thoroughly. MCSO acknowledges the courage of the students who came forwarded and reported this incident. We appreciate the collaboration with the Penfield Central School District.
