On January 20, 2024 at 12:31 a.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies patrolling I-390 South near Scottsville Rd. in the Town of Gates stopped a black Jeep Patriot, which had a suspended registration. Deputies discovered the driver of the Jeep, Sheldon Murray, had a suspended New York State driver’s license. While searching the vehicle, deputies found an H&K 9mm handgun, and a magazine loaded with nine rounds in the center console. Additionally, a number of unidentified blue pills were discovered in the vehicle and subsequently sent to the Monroe County Crime Lab for analysis. Murray and his passenger, Akeem Johnson, were detained and transported to Zone C for an interview.

Sheldon A. Murray, 33, of Rochester is charged with:

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Class C-Felony)

Akeem T. Johnson, 32, of Rochester is charged with:

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Class C-Felony)

>Mr. Johnson is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing a firearm in New York State. Without a NYS pistol permit, Murray is not allowed to have a handgun. Both were arraigned in Gates Town Court and remanded to the Monroe County Jail on $1,500 cash, $10,000 bond, and $25,000 partially secured bond. Sheldon Murray made bail on January 20th and was released. Akeem Johnson is still in the Monroe County Jail.

Additional charges may be lodged depending upon the outcome of drug analysis by the Monroe County Crime Lab.

The deputies’ exemplary effort in maintaining vigilance during the early morning hours resulted in the successful removal of an illegal firearm from the streets.
